Ivy's Journey: From Living in Fear to Building Confidence
The Challenge
Ivy, a nine-year-old rescue crossbreed, had spent years in a shelter before being adopted. She was extremely fearful of people – particularly men – and would bark continuously whenever anyone entered the property. She rarely left her safe spaces, struggled on walks, and lacked confidence in unfamiliar situations.
My Assessment
Rather than focusing solely on Ivy's barking, I assessed her emotional wellbeing, history, environment, and daily routine. It became clear that fear and anxiety were driving her behaviour, and that building trust and confidence needed to come before changing the unwanted behaviours.
The Plan
- Comprehensive behaviour assessment
- Confidence-building and enrichment activities
- Gradual desensitisation to visitors and new experiences
- Positive reinforcement techniques
- Owner coaching and ongoing support
The Outcome
Over time, Ivy became noticeably more confident around her home and with trusted people. She recovered more quickly when visitors arrived, explored her environment more willingly, became calmer on walks, and even learned to trust me enough to allow me to fit her harness – a milestone that once seemed impossible. While her journey is still ongoing, Ivy continues to make steady, positive progress.
Every fearful dog deserves the opportunity to feel safe. With patience, understanding, and the right behaviour plan, confidence can grow one small step at a time.
